Meditation For Emotional Healing - An Approach To Dealing With Underlying Stress
In everyday life, numerous situations can potentially leave us feeling stressed, without us even realizing it. This happens as a result of things occupying space in our heads (subconscious mind), leaving us perplexed, and trying to make sense of why we’re having trouble sleeping through the night. Even fairly common daily activities like disciplining kids, managing work, finances, and coping with tragic relationships can be a cause of stress that we often fail to address. But before we move on to the cure or prevention of our mental problems, it’s important to first understand the term stress and its symptoms.
What Is Stress?
Stress is our body's response to unforeseen and difficult circumstances; regardless of whether they're trivial or serious. When you feel attacked or threatened, a chemical response generates in your body that enables you to act in an approach to avert damage. This response is known as "flight or flight," or the stress reaction. In such cases, your pulse raises, breathing quickens, muscles tense, and blood pressure rises. And that’s how your body prepares you to protect yourself.
Symptoms Of Stress
Its one thing to be stressed out - another to know that you are, in fact, a victim of chronic stress. To help you understand whether or not stress has taken a toll on you, here is a list of symptoms that you should look out for.
Becoming easily agitated, frustrated, and moody
Feeling overwhelmed, like you are losing control or need to take control
Having difficulty relaxing and quieting your mind
Feeling bad about yourself (low self-esteem), lonely, worthless, and depressed
Aggressive feelings and behavior
Decreased interest in appearance
Problems in communication
Social withdrawal and isolation
Upset stomach, including diarrhea, constipation, and nausea
Aches, pains, and tense muscles
Chest pain and rapid heartbeat
Loss of sexual desire and/or ability
Nervousness and shaking, ringing in the ear, cold or sweaty hands and feet
Dry mouth and difficulty swallowing
A commonly misunderstood term, meditation is not all calm and peace. It’s not a quest to strictly go in a blank space of mind where you’re not thinking. It does not work that way. Because when asked to NOT think about something, the human mind automatically diverts itself to think that very thing. Here’s a thought experiment. Do whatever you want but do NOT think about a banyan tree.
What? You can’t stop thinking about the tree? Well, it’s completely natural. And this is where meditation comes in. It helps you take little control over your mind so it doesn’t make you a puppet. It opens up a space for you to perceive what's happening in your brain, including the striking and amazing development of your feelings — up, down, and sideways. You can figure out how to avoid fighting with them and instead, embrace them.
